Thanks for the feedback. I am trying to get better at testing fonts in different languages.I did some more testing and confirmed that the OpenType designer in FontCreator is not a good choice for testing. That kinda surprised me.
LibreOffice (LO) seems to be a better font/language testing tool. Both the Dhurjati font and Nirmala UI fonts did work properly in LO.The test text from above looked correct.Surprisingly Arial Unicode MS did not look right.

The font issues are still not resolved. Gimp and PS handle Indic fonts better. Affinity's challenge is making our work too difficult. The language here is Teluguనైతిక (See how it is in affinity in screenshot)
Both Kannada and Telugu scripts are rich in conjunct consonant clusters, and many existing fonts have difficulty rendering the below-base forms correctly, so besides the fine-tuning of the letterform proportions, a major priority has been to ensure the correct representation of the clusters, including two- and three-consonant conjuncts.
Lava is a highly legible, contemporary typeface developed for editorial design projects. While its Indic variants Devanagari, Kannada and Telugu feature classical proportions and weight distributions, they also strive to bring modernity, function and a refined character into editorial projects or any situation involving lengthy text and requiring high-performance fonts working smoothly across many different writing scripts.
Variable fonts offer continuous ranges of styles, often without additionallatency. This is relevant to responsive design. This dynamic typography uses continuous ranges of styles, offering all theweights between 100 and 900 on a page, and responsively varying the weightbased on some conditions.
With static fonts, styles of weight are usually specified as multiples of 100(e.g. 300, 400, 700). Variable fonts offer both the standard weights andintermediate weights. To render an intermediate weight:
Be precise about the styles you are using. The API delivers the requested stylesin the most compact set of fonts. Requesting unused styles may cause your usersto download more font data than they need, causing more latency. If you use only3 specific weights, specify them in your request as individual styles. If youuse a continuous range of weights, specify that weight range in your request.
We'll supply a kit containing webfonts that can be used within digital ads, such as banner ads. This kit may be shared with third parties who are working on your behalf to produce the ad creatives, however you are wholly responsible for it.
Webfonts can be used on a single domain. Agencies responsible for multiple websites, for example web design agencies or hosting providers, may not share a single webfont license across multiple websites.
For example, if you order 250,000 page views, when your webpages using the webfonts have been viewed 250,000 times, you will need to buy the webfont package again for an additional number of prepaid pageviews.
If the font you have selected omits these characters, you get the blocks (which are referred to as "tofu" internally at Apple). Apple has done their best at a SystemUI level to prevent this from happening (if you've ever wondered what all those noto - e.g. Noto Sans - fonts that come pre-installed, they're glyph libraries. noto == NoTo == No Tofu).
Formerly called Typekit, Adobe Fonts is a library featuring more than 14,000 free fonts at your disposal across many Adobe apps. Browse the collection to find preset fonts that match the mood of your clip.
Custom fonts are an easy way to add a measure of distinctiveness to your work. Scour the internet for less-common fonts that are hard to replicate. Suppose your piece is a documentary. Instead of using common sans serifs like Arial or Helvetica, try adding a warm, pleasant typeface like Merriweather for a unique look.
I just stumbled on this Wikipedia site where all the characters are unknown to the system. So apparently this Language is called Telugu and to be able to read it the package ttf-telugu-fonts is needed. Though I cannot find this package in the sources. Typing sudo apt-get install ttf-telugu-fonts returns with an error that this candidate does not exist. How can I install this Telugu font?
This page provides a (not exhaustive) list of fonts, grouped by script, that are available via the Windows 10 and Mac OS X operating systems, as well as Google's Noto fonts and SIL fonts. Note that some of the Windows and Mac fonts have to be downloaded by the user before they can be applied to text. Install Adobe NotDef font for best results.
A downwards pointing arrow next to a Mac or Windows icon indicates that the font needs to be downloaded by the user before it is available. (If you are choosing fonts for use in a CSS font-family property, you should be cautious about adding these fonts, since the reader may not have downloaded them.)
In some cases, a square box with a cross in it is displayed (this only occurs in the text view if you have the Adobe NotDef font installed). This indicates that the font doesn't cover all the glyphs needed to represent the sample text. Most often this applies to punctuation or other common characters. In Latin text, in particular, it indicates which fonts support extended characters and which don't. In normal use in a Web browser, glyphs for such characters will be backfilled by using a glyph from some other font.
By default, fonts fall into one of the following two categories: 'modulated', indicates that strokes have varying widths (and usually have tapered or pointed ends), whereas 'monoline' fonts have strokes that are generally the same width (and stroke ends are usually squared off). In some cases, the choice between these two categories is difficult to make. Also, some of the larger fonts (esp. Arial Unicode MS) may render some scripts with modulated glyphs and others with monoline, all within the same font. Use this tagging as a rough guide only.
The Mac and Windows fonts used in the images are provided by the Operating System (although, as mentioned earlier, some fonts need to be downloaded using the OS font management tools). The SIL fonts are provided on their download page. The Noto fonts used in images are typically taken from the Phase III list on GitHub, although some may be older and sourced from the public site.
As you are picking your fonts, remember that using too many custom fonts will slow down your website. This is why you should select two fonts and use them throughout your design. This will also bring consistency to your design.
Loading fonts directly using CSS3 @font-face is not always the best solution. For example, if you are using a font from Google Fonts or Typekit, then it is best to serve the font directly from their server for optimal performance.
